The Comstock is a vintage 60’s high-rise housing block located just north of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco’s Nob Hill neighborhood.  The project brought one of the penthouse units down to the studs and replaced the single bed/bath layout with a two bed/two bath plan.  This dense layout added accessibility features, a second bedroom for an in-home caregiver, and the second bath for the new bedroom and guests alike, making the unit suitable for aging-in-place. 

Built-in features like benches, niches, shelving and storage were designed to maximize the unit’s compact footprint.  Walnut woodwork elements are nested below a datum line eight feet above the floor level; these elements appear like a solid base against which the vaulted ceiling arches freely overhead, a nod to the units location up in the fog and clouds.
